Phase 1 Reopening: Preparing to Return to Work Safely

As we enter Phase 1 of reopening the state’s economy, preparing to bring back normal operations has left many leaders with one big question, ‘How can I assure my team of their safety when they return to work in the office?’

In addition to following recommended social distancing and health & safety guidelines, businesses, schools and government offices are turning to thermal checkpoints to prevent virus exposure and re-occurring spread.

Read on to learn how thermal checkpoints work to protect staff and visitors.

First Line of Defense: Identify possible infections before they enter the building

Thermal cameras for body temperature screening quickly and accurately identify people with a higher-than-normal body temperature, one of the key symptoms of COVID-19, before they enter a facility. This allows facilities to prevent a potentially infected individual from entering the building and spreading the virus to others.

Non-contact thermal checkpoints remove the need for high-risk manual temperature screening

Traditional methods of temperature screening (like handheld infrared thermometers, for example) require you to get very close to a person who may be infected, increasing the risk of the virus being transferred.

In contrast, with thermal cameras, the checkpoint automatically and accurately measures the temperature of an individual from 10 feet away. The thermal cameras require zero contact and remove the need put staff at risk with manual temperature measurement.

Faster screening keeps operations running smoothly

With the ability to accurately measure the body temperature of up to 30 people per second, thermal cameras are significantly faster than handheld temperature screening. Individuals can walk through the thermal checkpoint at a normal pace. There’s no need to stop people for an accurate temperature measurement.  By comparison, a forehead thermometer takes at least three seconds to measure a single person, which can quickly lead to slow downs for those entering the building.

Checkpoints with built-in AI are highly accurate, even with individuals wearing face covering, masks, or carrying hot drinks
When considering the use of thermal cameras for temperature screening, the most important factor is accuracy. Smart thermal checkpoints like the solution developed by GI meet the strict requirement of +/-0.3ËšC (+/-0.5ËšF), which is the certified international standard for measuring human skin temperature. Additionally, built-in artificial intelligence allows the system to accurately measure temperature even when people wear masks/headwear, and it helps reject false alarms caused by hot drinks.
